ABOUT MATT
I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a double first in Russian and Linguistics with a distinction in spoken Russian.
However, I was not always “good” at Russian. I don’t have Russian family, and I had never studied a Slavic language before going to university. Even though I cared, I found it incredibly hard, and I felt alone in my studies.
My first few years at university were full of grammar tables, translation classes and literature seminars taught in English. I had just one hour of speaking practice a week and no idea how to use Russian in real life.
By the time I flew to Kazakhstan (alone) for my year abroad, I was anxious, underprepared and completely alone. I stumbled through passport control, almost got caught by a taxi scam and struggled with basic admin in my first few months. Very quickly, I realised I was not the only one.

In 2022 I founded the UBASEECAS, a student-led network for people studying Russian. Through this, I heard from over a hundred Russian Studies students who had near-identical experiences – who felt strong on paper, but underprepared for real life in the Post-Soviet space.
My own imperfect experience of learning Russian, my skills and qualifications in teaching and coaching, plus some help with expert mentors, have all helped create Steppe with Confidence. This 5-month programme helps students like you feel confident speaking Russian, equipped for everyday life in Central Asia and supported through the ups and downs of the year abroad. It’s what I wish I had!
YOU DON'T NEED TO BE PERFECT.
YOU JUST NEED THE RIGHT SUPPORT.

“Matt tailored the course to relevant situations that were practical to real life which made studying more enjoyable than at university.
I really appreciated how Matt uses his linguistic expertise to break down complicated grammar and vocabulary, making everything much easier to understand. His personality makes the lessons fun, engaging and interactive and I truly can’t recommend him more <3”
