Mapping Applications & Directions
Are you preparing for a year abroad in Central Asia? This free demo lesson provides practical, essential skills you need to confidently navigate cities like Almaty, Astana, and Bishkek, whether you're asking for directions or giving them. This lesson is a perfect example of a single teaching week from our comprehensive Russian course. Though please note, this is not a lesson on the course syllabus, so there's even more where this came from!
This video lecture combines crucial cultural knowledge with practical Russian language skills. What You'll Learn in this Free Lesson:
Cultural & Practical Elements:
Mapping Softwares: Why Google Maps, while functional, isn't your best option for most of the major Central Asian cities.
Essential Taxi Apps: Bolt and Uber aren't available in Kyrgyzstan - so let's see what is!
Safety & Privacy: Learn how to adjust language and privacy settings on 2ГИС.
Bonus: Alternative options to street view for Almaty and Astana.
Functional Linguistic Elements:
Vocabulary: Build your vocabulary with 23 contextual words, including key verbs of motion, essential for giving and receiving directions.
Grammar: Повелительное наклонение (imperative mood), focusing on the critical difference between issuing a command (e.g., поверни 'turn!') and making an invitation (e.g., входи́ 'come in').
Listening: A custom-made listening exercise for you to practice. See PDF below for bonus exercises.
Interactive activity: Using Minecraft to help solidify understanding of verbs of motion and direction giving.
Note, the full course is not asynchronous! Every week there is a video to get through, but there is also a weekly live lesson to attend where we put together the "theory" of the video into practice.
This is reserved exclusively for Steppe with Confidence participants, so be sure to get your space before they fill up!
