Over the years, I've spoken to many university students studying Russian, and one thing comes up again and again.

Students often know far more grammar than they think they do.

The problem is that their knowledge is scattered:

Cases are in one notebook.
Aspect is in another.
Verbs of motion are buried somewhere in a folder from last year.
And participles remain that mysterious topic they vaguely remember covering once.

This doesn't happen because you're unorganised or because you're lazy.

It's due to the natural structure of university:

You covered genitive case in semester/term 1 of first year.
You looked at verbs and the mysterious 1st and 2nd conjugations at some point
- - and, let's not lie, we know that this is a really bad system at capturing how verbs work!
Participles and gerunds were probably rushed in at the end of 2nd year
And some students only look at participles properly towards the end of their year abroad, when most of their "time is up"

Steppe by Steppe was designed to bring everything together.

Rather than seeing this as a simple website or as a university grammar course, see it as a structured grammar hub for university students studying Russian to help you go through all of the necessary grammar in your own time, practice it, ask questions in judgement free zone, and meet other students who are in a similar position.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

The programme is split into 4 modules:

Cases - learn everything you need to know about cases. We're not just looking at endings, but patterns and systems. Rather than hearing things like "this word is an odd one out, just memorise it for the sake of it", you'll be given clear rules and systems that govern what you might have been taught as "exceptions". We look at everything from singular nouns in genitive, to the difference between между обоими европейскими языками and между обеими европейскими странами.
Verb conjugations - learn every conjugation type to exist in Russian. Yes! That's right. There are no "exceptional verbs"; I have created 20 linguistically logical categories of non-past conjugations, and we go through them all - from я читаю to это займёт 5 минут. We also look at past tenses types, reflexives, and imperatives.
Verbs of motion - this of course deserves its own separate module. Instead of looking at every prefix, then looking at verbs of motion, and then expecting you to just put 2+2 together to make 16, we will instead go through every single possible verb of motion with every single prefix, all the way from Я хожу в школу to корабль обплавает вокруг айсберга.
Gerunds, participles, aspects and mood - These structures, which students typically find more advanced, actually become extremely useful once unlocked. However, despite being so complex, most universities rush these in at the academic year. Here, we flesh them out, give you a chance to really understand them, and start using them more. Whether you're still not sure what participles actually do, or looking to find the right way of writing the perfect introduction to your Russian essay, you'll learn the tools how to do this independently here.

Unlimited exercises - This isn't marketing exaggeration. I've built more than 20 custom grammar chatbots designed specifically for Russian learners. Want to practise accusative endings? You can. Need more work on aspect? No problem. Still struggling with stress patterns in perfective future forms? There's practice for that too. You can work in writing or by speaking aloud.
